Hugues de Payens (c. 1070–1136) was a French knight and one of the founding figures of the Knights Templar. Following the First Crusade, he and a small group of knights established an order dedicated to protecting Christian pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land.

Around 1119, the group that would become the Knights Templar was formed, with Hugues serving as its first Grand Master. The order received formal recognition at the Council of Troyes in 1129 and would grow into one of the most famous military orders of the medieval world.
