Saladin was the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty and one of the most famous leaders of the 12th century. He is particularly remembered for his victory at the Battle of Hattin in 1187, the subsequent recapture of Jerusalem and his encounters with Richard the Lionheart during the Third Crusade.
