Kublai Khan (1215–1294) was a grandson of Genghis Khan and became Great Khan of the Mongol Empire. He conquered the Southern Song dynasty and founded China's Yuan dynasty, becoming its first emperor in 1271.
His court would later become famous in Europe through the writings associated with Marco Polo, helping make Kublai Khan one of the best-known Mongol rulers in Western history.
