Empress Matilda (1102–1167) was the daughter of King Henry I of England and granddaughter of William the Conqueror. After the death of her brother William Adelin, Henry designated Matilda as his heir.

Following Henry's death in 1135, her cousin Stephen of Blois seized the English crown. Matilda challenged him, beginning the long civil conflict remembered as The Anarchy.

Although Matilda was never formally crowned Queen of England, her campaign fundamentally changed English history. Her son eventually succeeded Stephen as King Henry II, beginning the Plantagenet dynasty.

A beautiful historical centrepiece for collectors of medieval England, The Anarchy, Norman and Plantagenet history, medieval queens and powerful women in history.
