Eleanor of Aquitaine (c. 1122–1204) was one of the wealthiest and most influential women of medieval Europe. Duchess of Aquitaine in her own right, she became first Queen of France through her marriage to Louis VII and later Queen of England through her marriage to Henry II.

She was also the mother of two English kings, Richard I — Richard the Lionheart — and King John. Eleanor remained politically active well into old age and became one of the defining personalities of the Plantagenet dynasty.

Her remarkable life of queenship, politics, rebellion, crusading and dynastic power has made her one of the most famous women of the entire Middle Ages.
