Charles VII of France (1403–1461) became king during one of the darkest periods of the Hundred Years’ War. His cause was famously supported by Joan of Arc, whose victories helped open the way to his coronation at Reims in 1429. During his reign, French royal authority recovered dramatically and much of the territory held by the English was reconquered.
