Jan Žižka (c.1360–1424) was a Bohemian general, military strategist, and national hero remembered as one of the greatest commanders in European history.

Žižka rose to prominence during the Hussite Wars, a series of conflicts that erupted after the execution of religious reformer Jan Hus, whose teachings challenged the authority of the Catholic Church.

As commander of the Hussite forces in Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic), Žižka became famous for his extraordinary battlefield innovations.

His greatest military achievement was the development of wagon fort tactics (wagenburg) — armored wagons arranged into mobile fortresses, equipped with early firearms and crossbow units. These tactics allowed poorly equipped peasant armies to defeat heavily armored knights repeatedly.

Remarkably, Jan Žižka continued leading armies successfully after losing one eye in battle… and later becoming completely blind.

Despite blindness, he remained undefeated in every major campaign he commanded, making him one of history’s rare undefeated generals.
