Godfrey of Bouillon (c.1060–1100) was a Frankish nobleman and one of the principal leaders of the First Crusade, the campaign launched by Christian Europe to capture Jerusalem from Muslim control.

Born in what is now modern-day Belgium or the Lower Lorraine region, Godfrey became renowned for his discipline, military leadership, and devotion to faith. When Pope Urban II called for the First Crusade in 1095, Godfrey answered and became one of its most respected commanders.

After years of brutal warfare across Anatolia and the Levant, crusader forces captured Jerusalem in 1099. Following victory, Godfrey refused to call himself king, believing no mortal should wear a golden crown in the city where Christ wore a crown of thorns.

Instead, he accepted the title:

“Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre”

He became the first ruler of the newly established Kingdom of Jerusalem, laying the foundation for Christian rule in the Holy Land.
